Just around the corner is the Galiano Literary Festival. I’ve been involved with the Galiano Island Bookstore and Literary Festival over the past 3 years helping out with documentation and photography and this year I asked Lee and Jim if I could work on compiling some author features/interviews featuring the diverse voices who will be joining us at the Galiano Oceanfront Inn and Spa this February 17-19th.

We’ve had world leading writers and authors come share their thoughts and process with us and this year is no exception. Check out our Facebook for a complete list of people who will be participating in this years festival and pls considering purchasing a ticket and joining us for some of the events!

Poetry

Of John Pass‘ winning poem, “Margined Burying Beetle,” judge Russell Thornton says: [The poem] presents a questing biocentric poetic awareness, an intense elegiac tone, and a portrayal in which a creature conventionally conferred little status appears as a potent agent of the creation, ‘a writer of a future’ offering sacred illumination to a shamanistic speaker who witnesses it ‘wondrously / shifting!’ on ‘plush moss’. The play of language in the piece is open and exploratory and at the same time taut, controlled; the poet here utters quick, quirky changes and rich phrases. There is the ‘crabapple / small and scabby of late but in the spring / a clustered mass of port-wine glory above / wild iris.’ There is the beetle of the title, ‘sinuous / wriggler chevroned orange on black’ that ‘nudged / the resurrection’ [the speaker’s] way in sunlight…’ In all its aspects, including complexity of theme, depth of feeling, imaginative movement, and deft lyrical execution, this poem is a marvellous success.

The Fabulous Authors Dinner!

One of the most popular events at The Galiano Literary Festival is our Saturday evening Authors Dinner. Complete with a red carpet entrance and a chance to get a photo with your favourite author, this event is sure to sell out this year!

The event will take place in the beautiful and scenic dining room at the Galiano Inn and Chef Dean Hillier goes that extra mile and creates gorgeous and delicious dishes. If you are attending the festival, this is a great opportunity to schmooze with our festival authors, the festival organizers and fellow attendees!

Tickets are $50 each and can be purchased over the phone at 250-539-3340 or in person at Galiano Island Books at 76 Madrona Drive.
